A Forgotten Excavation

The Jackson County Historical Society (JCHS) invites the public to a free program, “A FORGOTTEN EXCAVATION,” on Sunday, October 26th, at 2:00 PM at the County Museum on the Fairgrounds in Maquoketa, IA. The event will shed light on one of the area’s largest, yet little-known, archaeological digs conducted 99 years ago. In 1926, Beloit College's Logan Museum of Anthropology excavated a major rock shelter site (likely Seeberger Cave) in Jackson County, unearthing significant artifacts. The program will be led by William Green, an expert with deep ties to Iowa archaeology, having served as the State Archaeologist of Iowa (1988-2001) and the director of the Logan Museum of Anthropology. Green will discuss the people, the finds, and the archaeological importance of the historic excavation. All are welcome to attend this no-charge event, with refreshments served afterward.
